Focus Group Preparation

We will use prints of the prototypes, post-it notes, pens and scissors to supplement the discussions.

Excitedly, we are looking forward to the upcoming Focus Group sessions with teachers and students in the U.K., Italy and Austria. Today, the content schedule has been created. With the participants, I will discuss 4 to 5 prototypes. The amount will depend on the flow of the conversation and the time available for discussion!

The prototypes are: Continue reading

TeamUp bugs & fixes

Note recorder in Team Up

TeamUp's note recorder in action

iTEC pilots are now commencing in schools around Europe. Our tool TeamUp is used in many of the pilots, and we have already received much valuable feedback in form of bug reports and feature requests. For a developer, the bug reports are the most disliked, but also the most prominent and important part of the feedback, and often the issues are so serious that they require immediate fixes.

One of the lasting source of problems in TeamUp has been when the TeamUp-widget (javascript) launches the team’s Note Recorder (Flash) which in turns saves recordings to the server (PHP). Taking photos of the learners also uses the same chain of components. These three parts have to communicate with each others, and problems surface because the javascript and flash -parts can run in many different browsers and operating systems with small but infuriating differences.

Today, after several tries and smaller fixes, we fixed the major source of the problems and I think that we finally have a solid communication between the flash parts and the actual widget. Continue reading

Cycle 2 – Pre-pilot learning activities submitted

Layout of a learning activity as presented to a pre-pilot teacher.

Based on the cycle 2 scenarios and participatory design workshops with teachers, we designed learning activities for the iTEC cycle 2 pre-pilots. The main finding of the analysis process was that all scenarios follow project-based learning. Hence, all participating teachers follow the same basic structure for their pre-pilots. Each pre-pilot is composed of the following learning activities: Continue reading

Analyzing the reflections of teachers

Analyzing the teacher reflections of cycle 1 pre-pilots Photo: Aapo Rista

Teachers participated in the cycle 1 pre-pilot study of the iTEC project. On Monday and Tuesday, we analyzed the teacher’s reflections in detail. The analysis is still ongoing, but we can already say that we received 17 reflections from teachers of 7 different European countries so far. The learning stories that teachers chose to work with were Outdoor study project, Collaborative Media Project, Reacting to Student Feedback and Recognizing Informal Learning. Interesting was also that almost all learning activities were pre-piloted. Currently, we are still receiving reflection forms! Continue reading

Cycle 2 – Familiarizing with the mini scenarios

Last Thursday, the cycle 2 mini scenarios arrived. Based on a vote of the iTEC partners, 8 scenarios will be taken further to be fleshed out during a scenario development workshop organized by Future Lab later this month.

LeGroup met on Monday to familiarize with the mini scenarios, to ideate design inspirations and to understand reoccurring themes that could inform the further design of cycle 1 prototypes.

The discussion about the scenarios concluded with six ideas. Here, brief descriptions of the ideas followed by the related scenarios. Continue reading
